HT03XL vs HW03XL vs LK03XL: A Spec-by-Spec Pavilion Battery Comparison

XiongYing Zeng

The three batteries all have a voltage of 11.55V, but they aren't interchangeable. The HT03XL (41.04Wh) is suitable for Pavilions manufactured in 2018 to 2021. The HW03XL (41.04Wh) fits Pavilions made in 2021 and later, provided that a different connector is used. The LK03XL (52.5Wh) goes with the x360 models and contains 27% more energy. Make sure that the code on your present battery pack matches.

The voltage is the same, with three different shapes. Although both the HT03XL and the HW03XL have a capacity of 41.04Wh at 11.55V, HP changed the position of the connector and screw arrangement when it redesigned the Pavilion in 2021. A physical swap is not possible in either direction.

The LK03XL is an exception in terms of capacity; its 52.5Wh battery contains 11.46Wh more than the 41.04Wh batteries. This additional energy gives it about 27% more runtime, which is equivalent to one extra hour when using a Pavilion 15.

A few sellers do list them as being compatible, but they are incorrect. Those listings which state that one pack is suitable for both HT03XL and HW03XL laptops are misleading. You should always use the exact code that is printed on the battery you currently have.

1. The Side-by-Side Spec Table

HT03XL HW03XL LK03XL
Voltage 11.55V 11.55V 11.55V
Capacity 41.04Wh 41.04Wh 52.5Wh
Cells 3-cell 3-cell 3-cell
Connector exit Side edge Face Side edge (different layout)
Fits Pavilion 14/15/17, 2018โ€“2021 Pavilion 15-eg/17-cn, 2021+ Pavilion x360 15, Envy x360 15
HP spare number L11119-855 L97300-005 L09280-855
Site product Not stocked HW03XL, $49.99 LK03XL, $109.00

The table immediately gives the most commonly asked answer: the two 41.04Wh batteries are the same except for the position of the connector, whereas the 52.5Wh battery differs in capacity. All three have the same voltage, which is the reason why sellers confuse them.

2. HT03XL: The 2018โ€“2021 Workhorse

More Pavilion models were available with the HT03XL than any other model in the range. The design, which features three cells, a capacity of 41.04Wh and a voltage of 11.55V, applies to the Pavilion 14-ce/cf/ck/cm/df, 15-cs/cw/da/db/dw/dy, and 17-by/ca series, as well as the HP 240/250 G7 business notebooks.

Model Families Examples
Pavilion 14 14-ce, 14-cf, 14-ck, 14-cm, 14-df
Pavilion 15 15-cs, 15-cw, 15-da, 15-db, 15-dw, 15-dy
Pavilion 17 17-by, 17-ca
Business crossovers HP 240 G7, 250 G7

The model number L11119-855 is the one that identifies the family, while the revision suffixes -856 and -857 pertain to the same pack. Since the HT03XL was shipped in such large quantities, it is also the most commonly faked Pavilion battery; those listings priced under $20 which include stock photographs do not contain the Samsung or LG cells that the label states.

We do not carry the HT03XL. When your label says HT03XL, you should order from a seller who carries the spare number L11119-855 and who shows the side-edge connector in their photos. From my experience, the position of the connector is the quickest way to spot a fake: genuine HT03XL units have the cable exiting from the side edge, and any photos showing a face-exit cable are from a different type of battery.

3. HW03XL: The 2021+ Redesign

At the time of HP's refresh of the Pavilion range in 2021 (for example, the 15-eg, 15-eh and 17-cn series), it left the electrical specifications unchanged and instead altered the shape. The HW03XL still shows an amount of 41.04Wh at 11.55V, but the connector has moved from the side edge to the front surface, and the position of the screws has also changed.

The redesign ensures that the two types of packs are physically incompatible when inserted in either direction; it is not possible for an HT03XL to be placed in an HW03XL bay, nor is the reverse situation feasible. Sellers who list both codes on the same product page are providing incorrect order instructions.

HT03XL and HW03XL side by side with their labels visible, arrows pointing to the side-edge connector on the HT03XL and the face connector on the HW03XL.

4. LK03XL: The Capacity Upgrade

The LK03XL is completely different from the 41.04Wh version; the 52.5Wh battery, at 11.55V, is included in the Pavilion x360 15-inch convertibles and the Envy x360 15 models, since these machines have a chassis large enough to accommodate a taller cell stack.

The figures are straightforwardโ€”52.5Wh minus 41.04Wh gives a stored energy gain of 11.46Wh. If you divide that amount by the original 41.04Wh, the result is an increase of 28%, equivalent to about one additional hour of usage on a Pavilion 15 when performing light tasks. That extra hour is important for convertible users during flights and in classrooms.

HT03XL LK03XL Difference
Capacity 41.04Wh 52.5Wh +11.46Wh
Relative gain โ€” โ€” +28%
Runtime on light work ~4 hours ~5 hours ~1 extra hour
Thickness Standard +4.3mm Needs a taller bay

5. The Interchangeability Truth Table

You Have You Want Works? Why
HT03XL HW03XL ๐Ÿ”ด No Connector moved from side to face in 2021
HW03XL HT03XL ๐Ÿ”ด No Screw layout differs, pack does not seat
HT03XL LK03XL ๐ŸŸก Only if the bay fits Same side connector on some models, 4.3mm thicker
LK03XL HT03XL ๐ŸŸก Rarely Downgrade, needs the smaller bay to accept the larger pack
HW03XL LK03XL ๐Ÿ”ด No Different connector family

The reason is that two of the red rows in the table are responsible for the majority of the returns I receive. Customers order the 'same voltage' pack without checking the connector and find that it arrives appearing correct but fitting incorrectly. The connector photo check stops both of these mistakes that occur with the red rows.

6. The Upgrade Decision: HT03XL to LK03XL

The only valid way to upgrade is from the 41.04Wh HT03XL to the 52.5Wh LK03XL, but only in the case of models whose battery compartment can accommodate the thicker battery. The following diagram outlines the decision process:

Start by checking the connector. On the models which support the upgrade, both packs come from the side edge. In the case where your HT03XL cable comes from the face, the upgrade is not possible.

Check the depth of the bay; the LK03XL is roughly 4.3mm thicker than the HT03XL and will fit if your chassis has a raised cell area or a taller bay.
Check the service manual since the maintenance guide from HP lists the battery options that are approved for each model. To do this, search for your model followed by "maintenance and service guide PDF".

You can expect a runtime that is 28% greater; this is from 52.5Wh to 41.04Wh. When using a Pavilion 15 for light tasks, that works out to approximately one extra hour.

Your Situation Decision
Connector matches, bay has a raised cell area, manual lists LK03XL Upgrade. Gain 28% runtime.
Connector exits from the face Stop. The upgrade does not fit your model.
Connector matches but the bay is flat and shallow Stay with the 41.04Wh pack.

7. How to Tell Which One You Have

Signal Points To
Pavilion 14-ce/15-cs/15-da era (2018โ€“2021), cable exits the side HT03XL
Pavilion 15-eg/17-cn (2021+), cable exits the face HW03XL
Pavilion x360 15 or Envy x360 15 convertible LK03XL
Spare number on the white sticker L11119-855 = HT03XL, L97300-005 = HW03XL, L09280-855 = LK03XL

From what I've seen, the spare number settles every argument. The white sticker survives longer than the main label, and the number maps one-to-one to the pack. Read the sticker, match the number, and the comparison above becomes a confirmation instead of a guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

+ Are HT03XL and HW03XL interchangeable?

No. Both packs read 41.04Wh at 11.55V, but HP moved the connector from the side edge (HT03XL) to the face (HW03XL) when it redesigned the Pavilion in 2021, and the screw layouts differ. Neither pack seats in the other's bay. Sellers who list both codes on one product page sell wrong orders.

+ Can I upgrade my Pavilion from HT03XL to LK03XL?

Yes, on models whose battery bay fits the thicker pack. Check three things first: the connector must match (both exit from the side on compatible models), the bay must hold a pack roughly 4.3mm thicker, and the service manual must list the LK03XL as an option. The reward is 52.5Wh versus 41.04Wh, about 28% more runtime.

+ How do I know if I have an HT03XL or HW03XL battery?

Read the white spare number sticker: L11119-855 identifies the HT03XL, L97300-005 the HW03XL. Without the sticker, check the cable exit. The HT03XL exits from the side edge and shipped in 2018โ€“2021 Pavilions. The HW03XL exits from the face and shipped in 2021+ Pavilion 15-eg and 17-cn models.

+ What is the difference between HT03XL and LK03XL?

Capacity and fit. The HT03XL holds 41.04Wh and fits 2018โ€“2021 Pavilion 14/15/17 laptops. The LK03XL holds 52.5Wh and fits Pavilion x360 15 and Envy x360 15 convertibles. Both run 11.55V, but the LK03XL is roughly 4.3mm thicker and only drops into bays with room for the taller cell stack.

+ Which battery fits my HP Pavilion 15?

It depends on the generation. A 2018โ€“2021 Pavilion 15 (15-cs, 15-da, 15-dw) takes the HT03XL. A 2021+ Pavilion 15-eg takes the HW03XL. A Pavilion x360 15 takes the LK03XL. Read the code on your current pack or the white spare number sticker โ€” never order by "Pavilion 15" alone.

+ How much longer does a 52.5Wh battery last than a 41Wh battery?

Roughly 28% longer. The 52.5Wh LK03XL stores 11.46Wh more than the 41.04Wh packs, and runtime scales close to capacity on light workloads. On a Pavilion 15 doing browsing and documents, that works out to about one extra hour per charge.
