Dell 240W AC Adapter Solutions — Replacement Chargers for Precision, Alienware & G-Series

The Precision workstation or Alienware has stopped charging and a standard 65W power supply won't be sufficient. The Dell 240W AC adapter provides 19.5 volts at 12.3 amperes — this is the exact amount of wall power that these machines require when in use. We carry the genuine Dell part numbers, matching them by label, and include a one-year warranty.

What Is a Dell 240W AC Adapter — and Which Laptops Actually Need One?

This is the point: a 240-watt charger is not just a larger version of a 65-watt travel charger. It belongs to a different category of power supplies.

01 · How It Works

19.5V × 12.3A = 240W

A Dell 240W AC adapter takes wall AC and converts it to 19.5V DC capable of delivering up to 12.3 amps. That's what mobile workstations need. A Precision 7000 series with a discrete workstation GPU or an Alienware gaming machine at full boost will draw significantly more than a standard brick can supply. If you undersupply them the laptop will throttle, stop charging under load or just shut down.

The 19.5V 12.3A rating is printed on the label of every genuine Dell 240W brick.

02 · Who Needs It

Precision, Alienware, and loaded G-series

The AC adapter with a power rating of 240W is the one that is supplied with Precision 7000-series mobile workstations and with Alienware gaming laptops that are fitted with high-power GPUs. Laptops from the XPS, Inspiron and Latitude lines have a power requirement ranging from 65W to 130W and therefore do not need this adapter—inserting it will not cause them to charge any faster since the laptops only draw the amount of power that they require.

Check the wattage on your original adapter label before ordering anything.

03 · Safety & Fit

Genuine part numbers, large barrel tip

The precise Dell part numbers — LA240PM160 (PA-9E) and LA240PM190 (0D0X04) — are given so that you will be using a factory-made part and not a general "240W compatible" brick. Chargers with high wattage have a large 7.4 mm barrel tip, and a tip that doesn't match is the usual reason why "my new charger does not fit."

A 240W brick is a genuine replacement only when your original label says 240W.

⚠️ 240W is the deciding number: if your old label says 130W or 180W, a 240W brick is not the correct replacement for that machine. Read the label first.

Which Dell Machines Use the 240W AC Adapter

One card per family. So what does that mean for you? If your machine is not in the first three cards, it almost certainly does not need 240W.

01 / Precision 7000

Mobile workstations

Precision 7000-series machines with workstation GPUs ship with 180W–240W bricks. The LA240PM160 (PA-9E, 19.5V 12.3A) is the 240W match — confirm your label reads 240W.

02 / Alienware m & x

Gaming flagships

Alienware gaming laptops use 240W–330W adapters depending on GPU. Both stocked Dell 240W models cover the 240W configurations — match the part number on your brick.

03 / Dell G-series

G5 · G7 · G15 loaded configs

Higher-end G-series configs with big GPUs ship with 180W–240W. If your label says 240W, the LA240PM160 fits the bill.

04 / XPS

Not a 240W machine

XPS 13/15/17 run 65W–130W, mostly over USB-C. A Dell 240W AC adapter does not fit and is not needed — match the wattage on your own adapter instead.

Find the right wattage on the charger hub →

05 / Inspiron & Latitude

65W–90W class

Inspiron and Latitude charge from 65W–90W bricks with the small barrel tip. Do not order a 240W adapter for these — verify your label and match the lower wattage.

06 / Read the Label

30-second check

The label on your old brick answers everything: voltage (19.5V), current (12.3A on 240W models), wattage, and the part number (LA240PM160 / PA-9E / LA240PM190 / 0D0X04). Match all four.

Spec-Listed

Every listing states output, wattage and compatible machines — no "fits most" claims.

Why 19.5V is the number that must match

Voltage is the one spec where deviation damages hardware. Dell's high-wattage platform runs 19.5V; the 240W bricks deliver that at 12.3A. Wattage can be equal or higher for the same voltage platform, but voltage must match exactly — which is why we list the output on every Dell 240W AC adapter we sell.

How a 240W brick behaves when it fails

The warning signs are consistent: the laptop stops charging under gaming or rendering load, the brick runs hot, the plug gets loose, or Dell's BIOS reports "AC adapter not recognized — wattage unknown." If your brick shows any of these, stop using it and match a replacement by part number.

Dell 240W AC Adapter FAQ

The questions Dell owners actually ask — answered with our published specs and policy terms.

Precision 7000-series mobile workstations and Alienware gaming laptops with high-power GPUs are the main 240W machines, along with loaded G-series configs. XPS, Inspiron and Latitude run 65W–130W and do not need a 240W brick. The definitive check is the wattage printed on your original adapter label.
Yes. Dell's high-wattage platform outputs 19.5V — the 240W bricks deliver 19.5V at 12.3A (19.5 × 12.3 = 240W). Voltage is the one spec that must match exactly, which is why the rating is printed on every label and listed on every product page.
No. A lower-wattage brick cannot supply what the machine draws under load — the laptop will throttle, stop charging during heavy work, or shut down. The replacement wattage should match or exceed the original label, and 240W machines are specced for 240W.
Both are genuine Dell 240W bricks. The LA240PM160 (part PA-9E) is rated 19.5V 12.3A and covers Alienware and Precision series; the LA240PM190 (part 0D0X04) is listed for Alienware gaming laptops. Match the part number printed on your old adapter to pick the right one.
High-wattage Dell adapters use the large 7.4 mm barrel tip — noticeably bigger than the 4.5 mm tip on 65W–90W Dell bricks. If a replacement plug does not seat in your jack, it is the wrong tip size. Compare against your old plug before ordering.
On the same 19.5V platform, wattage may be equal or higher — a 330W brick supplies 240W machines fine. But it must be the same voltage and the correct connector, and a 330W brick is physically larger and costs more. Match the label's wattage unless you specifically want headroom.
Dell BIOS checks the adapter's ID signal through the center pin. A worn plug, damaged sense wire, or a non-Dell brick without the ID circuit triggers the warning — the laptop then refuses to charge at full rate. Replacing with the correct genuine part number normally clears the message.
Read the label on the brick. Look for the part number (LA240PM160, PA-9E, LA240PM190 or 0D0X04) and the output line: 19.5V × 12.3A equals 240W. If the label is worn off, the service tag on your laptop lets you look up the factory adapter wattage.
All batteries and adapters carry a 1-year replacement warranty against manufacturing defects. Returns: 60 days from receipt for unused items in original packaging; defective, damaged or incorrect items are handled at our cost. For other approved returns the buyer pays return shipping and a restocking fee may apply. Full terms on the warranty and refund policy pages.
Right here — both stocked part numbers, the LA240PM160 (PA-9E) at $69.99 and the LA240PM190 (0D0X04) at $119.99, both with a 1-year warranty and 60-day returns.
