⏱ Runtime collapsed
The battery used to run five hours. Now it dies in one. Capacity fades slowly, then falls off a cliff past 60–70% wear. That cliff is where you are.
⚡ Sudden shutdowns
The laptop dies at 30% or 40% with no low-battery warning. The fuel gauge has lost track of the worn cells. Restarting will not bring it back.
🚨 Swelling

Batteries die from heat, not hard work
Most "dead in a year" packs we bench-test actually cooked — on a blanket, in a hot car, under a pillow. Cycles get the blame. Heat does the damage. Five habits decide most of it.
Keep it cool
Blocked vents, laptops on beds, phones on dashboards — that is what kills packs. Hard use is the smaller half of the story.
Don't live at zero
Deep drains stress cells more than shallow ones. Charge around 15–20%, and skip chasing 100% every time.
Let the gauge learn the pack
Two or three times when the battery is new, run it to about 10%, then charge it full. The fuel gauge calibrates to the new cells.
Store spares half-full
A spare pack lives longest at 50–60% charge in a cool drawer. Full and on a shelf is how spares die unused.
Plugged in all day is fine
Modern packs stop charging at 100%. If the laptop lives on a desk, keep the vents clear and stop worrying about it.

How do I know which battery my laptop needs?

The sticker on the bottom of the laptop works — run msinfo32 on Windows for the exact system model, or just send it to us.
How long does a laptop battery last before it needs replacing?
About 300 to 500 full charge cycles — roughly 2 to 4 years of daily use. Heat and deep drains shorten that. Once a pack holds under 60–70% of its design capacity, runtime gets painful and it is time to swap. On Windows, powercfg /batteryreport shows both numbers. On a Mac, hold Option and click the battery icon.
Why is my laptop battery draining so fast all of a sudden?
Sometimes software, sometimes the pack. Open Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) and look for background apps eating power. Drop the brightness, switch to battery-saver mode, and install pending updates — some updates change power settings. If it still drains fast and also charges unusually fast, the cells are worn. That is a battery problem, not a settings problem.
How much does it cost to replace a laptop battery?
The part alone typically runs $20–50 for older models and $50–120 for newer ones. Shops add labor — Geek Squad charges about $40 for a simple install and $70 for internal packs. Is it worth replacing the battery, or should I buy a new laptop?
If the laptop still does its job, replace the battery. The fix costs a fraction of a new machine — often 50–80% less. If it is also slow, seven years old, and fighting you on software updates, the battery is just the first part to go. Put the money toward a new one instead.
Are third-party replacement batteries safe?
Quality varies wildly, so the honest answer is: it depends on the seller. Safe ones use grade A cells, matched voltage, and real protection circuits. Risky ones chase the lowest price with no-name cells and no testing. Buy from shops that publish part numbers, test before shipping, and put a warranty behind the pack — that is what we do, one year on every battery.
Can I replace an internal laptop battery myself?
Most internal packs are a five-minute job: unplug the connector, two screws, reverse. Glued-in packs — MacBooks since 2016 — need heat and patience. A repair shop with the right tools is fair there. Tell us your model and we will say which kind yours is.
Is it bad to leave your laptop plugged in all the time?
Not really, on anything from the last few years. The pack stops charging at 100% and the machine runs off AC. Two things matter more: keep the vents clear, because heat is the real battery killer, and if your brand offers a charge-limit tool — many ship an 80% cap for desk machines — turn it on.
Can I use my laptop without a battery?
Most laptops run fine on AC power with the battery removed. You lose portability, and a knocked cable means instant shutdown — no battery to catch it. Some models also run slower without one. It works fine as a stopgap while you wait for the replacement.
Why won't my Roomba hold its charge?
Clean the charging contacts on the robot and the dock first — dust there is the number one fake battery failure. Check the charging status in the iRobot app too. If runtime is still short after a full charge, the pack is done. One more trap before you order: ABL-D1 and ABL-D2 connectors do not interchange, so read the model sticker under the robot.
