What Is a Laptop Battery — and How Do You Pick the Right One?

Here is the thing: the label on your old battery already tells you what to buy. Most people just never look at it.

01 · How It Works

A lithium pack with its own watchdog

A laptop battery is a lithium-ion or lithium-polymer pack plus an integrated BMS (battery management system) that guards against overcharge, over-discharge, overheating, short circuits and voltage surges. When the pack ages, the laptop notices first: it throttles CPU and GPU boost clocks, shuts down without warning, and chains you to the wall outlet.

A fresh pack restores stable voltage and full boost clocks.

02 · How to Pick One

Match the part number, not the brand

Laptop batteries are defined by their part number, cell configuration and voltage platform — not the brand on the lid. A Dell Latitude 5480 takes the 93FTF (51Wh), while a Latitude 5400 takes the 4GVMP (68Wh), and the two do not swap despite both being Latitudes. Read the code printed on your old battery's label: "J60NH" for Dell, "01AV423" for Lenovo, and so on.

If your laptop is five years old, the number on the battery beats the sticker on the lid.

03 · Safety & Testing

Tested before it reaches your door

Every pack uses new cells and is tested before shipment for function and safety. Batteries are designed to match the reference specs of the original part — physical size, connector and communication protocol — for a plug-and-play fit, and are built to meet international safety standards including CE, FCC, RoHS and UN38.3 for lithium transport.

If a battery is going to fail, it most often does so soon after first use — so if yours misbehaves early, tell us right away.

Laptop Battery FAQ

What customers actually ask — answered with our published policy terms.

Use your battery part number. You can find it on the label of your original battery — for example, "J60NH" for Dell or "01AV423" for Lenovo. You can also search by your laptop's model name and series, printed on the bottom of the chassis.
Avoid letting the charge drop to 0% on a regular basis. Most modern lithium batteries perform best when kept between 20% and 80%. Also keep your laptop well ventilated — excessive heat damages the battery.
A good replacement improves it. Stable power delivery lets your CPU and GPU hold their boost clock speeds instead of throttling due to a failing battery or low voltage.
All replacement batteries carry a 1-year warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. That includes a battery that cannot charge normally, has very short runtime after charging, or cannot reach a full charge. A gradual decrease in charge capacity over time is normal wear, not a defect. For warranty claims the buyer is responsible for return shipping; we then send a replacement at our cost. Full terms on the warranty page.
You have 60 days from the date you receive your item to request a return. The item must be unused and not installed, in its original undamaged packaging, with valid proof of purchase. Items returned without prior approval are not accepted. If your item is defective, damaged or incorrect, we cover the return shipping or send a free replacement. For other approved returns, the buyer pays return shipping and a restocking fee may apply. Refunds go to your original payment method within 5–10 business days. Full terms on the refund policy page.
Orders are processed within 0–3 business days after payment is confirmed. We ship from two warehouses, and the origin is indicated on each product page. US-warehouse items ship to the United States only, with estimated delivery 2–7 business days after dispatch. China-warehouse items ship to Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, with estimated delivery 7–17 business days after dispatch. Every order ships with a tracking number. Full terms on the shipping policy page.
Packs are built to meet international safety standards including CE, FCC, RoHS and UN38.3 for lithium transport.
A higher-Wh pack (such as 9-cell vs 6-cell) gives longer runtime, but it may sit slightly raised from the base of the laptop. Both plug into the same connector when offered for the same machine.
For international orders, import duties, VAT and other customs-related taxes are determined by your destination country and are the buyer's responsibility. They are not included in the product price or shipping cost shown at checkout. Lithium-ion battery shipments may face additional international transport rules and delays.
The exact steps depend on your laptop model — consult your laptop's service manual for the right procedure. As a general rule: power the machine off, remove the bottom panel or battery latch, unplug the old pack, connect the new one and reassemble, then charge it fully before first use. If you are not comfortable opening your laptop, a local repair shop can do the swap in minutes.
