How Do You Pick the Right Cordless Tool Battery?

A cordless tool battery has to match its platform, and voltage alone will not get you there. Three checks cover every brand on this page.

01

Match the platform, not the number

Every major brand locks its cordless power tools to a proprietary battery mount and electronics: DeWalt 20V MAX, Milwaukee M18, Makita 18V LXT, Ryobi ONE+. A battery only crosses between tools inside the same platform. One footnote: a 20V MAX label describes the same 18V-class system as an 18V label; the higher number is the off-load peak.

Part numbers like DCB206, 48-11-1860 and BL1850B identify the exact pack.

02

Read amp-hours as runtime

Ah is capacity, not power. A 5.0Ah pack runs roughly twice as long as a 2.5Ah on the same drill or impact driver, and a bigger pack can feed high-draw tools like circular saws better. The tool's voltage and motor set the power; the Ah only sets how long it lasts. The trade-offs are weight and charge time.

Going up in Ah is safe on the same platform; going down just shortens runtime.

03

Grade A cells and the BMS decide the rest

A lithium-ion pack is cells plus a battery management system that balances charge and cuts off faults. Packs built on grade A cells with a working BMS hold their rated capacity for 300 to 500 cycles. The cheapest tier skips both, which is why it dies in a season. Several packs here add a fuel gauge so you can read the charge level on the tool.

Every pack on this page carries the same 1-year warranty.

Grade A Lithium Cells, Checked Before Dispatch

What separates a lasting pack from a season pack

The cells and the battery management system. Grade A lithium-ion cells hold rated capacity for 300 to 500 charge cycles, and the BMS balances every charge and shuts down faults before they become failures. The cheapest tier skips both. Several packs here add a fuel gauge, like the EGO BA2800T and the Milwaukee extended-capacity M18.

What we check before dispatch

Every pack runs a charge-discharge cycle and a capacity measurement on the bench before shipment, the same procedure we use on laptop batteries. Compatibility is matched against the replaced part numbers, DCB206 against 20V MAX, 48-11-1860 against M18, so wrong-fit packs get caught here, not in your drill.

Cordless Tool Battery FAQ

Yes, you can safely use a higher amp-hour battery in an 18V or 20V cordless drill as long as the voltage and platform match. Ah is runtime, not power: a 5.0Ah lithium-ion pack runs roughly twice as long as a 2.5Ah on the same drill or impact driver. The trade-offs are weight, cost and charge time, never safety.
No, power tool batteries are not interchangeable between brands, because DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch and Ryobi each lock their cordless tools to a proprietary battery mount and electronics. A pack crosses only inside its own platform, like Ryobi ONE+ across the whole ONE+ 18V range. Adapters exist but add bulk and can void warranties.
Ah on a tool battery means amp-hours, the measure of how much charge a lithium-ion pack holds per full charge. A 6.0Ah battery runs about three times as long as a 2.0Ah on the same drill or leaf blower. Ah does not raise a tool's power output; voltage and the motor set that.
A cordless tool battery stops holding a charge because of a deeply discharged pack the BMS refuses to charge, dirty or corroded terminals, a faulty charger, or worn-out lithium cells. Test the charger with a known-good pack first and clean the contacts. A pack stored fully dead for months may be locked out for good, and old cells have no fix but replacement.
Lithium-ion tool batteries last 300 to 500 charge cycles, about 2 to 3 years of regular cordless use. Heat, deep discharges and months of storage fully drained all shorten that. Packs kept around half charge in a cool dry place last the longest.
Yes, leaving power tool batteries on the charger for long periods speeds up degradation, even though modern lithium-ion chargers shut off when full. Pull the pack when the light says done and store it around half charge in a cool, dry place. A pack stored fully drained dies just as fast as one left on the charger.
A DeWalt 20V MAX drill uses the DCB-series lithium-ion battery, and this page stocks the MAX XR replacement for DCB206-2 and DCB205-2 at $59.99. One footnote: 20V MAX describes the same 18V-class system as other brands' 18V labels; the higher number is the off-load peak voltage. View the DeWalt pack.
A Milwaukee M18 impact driver uses the 48-11-xxxx lithium-ion battery line, and this page stocks the 8.0Ah extended-capacity 2-pack that replaces 48-11-1860, 48-11-1850 and 48-11-1840 at $89.99, plus a 5.0Ah 2-pack bundled with the 2848-20 tire inflator. View the M18 2-pack.
Good aftermarket cordless tool batteries match the platform mount, use grade A lithium-ion cells and carry a working BMS, and cost far less than brand-name packs. The bad tier skips all three and dies within a season. Every pack on this page is capacity-checked before dispatch and carries a 1-year warranty, including the genuine OEM Ryobi ONE+ PBP2007.
A 40V leaf blower drains a 6.0Ah lithium-ion battery in roughly 20 to 40 minutes of continuous running, which is why outdoor power equipment ships as 2-packs. A second pack beats waiting on a charge mid-job. The Greenworks G-MAX, Ryobi 40V and EGO 56V 2-packs on this page all follow that logic.
