What Is an ASUS Adapter Charger and How Do You Pick the Right One?

The AC power brick that charges your laptop and battery is the ASUS adapter charger. It takes two minutes and three checks to choose the replacement.

Read the part number first

The model is printed on the silver label on the underside of the original brick: ADP-280EB B, A20-240P1A, ADP-200JB D. That code, not the laptop name, decides the replacement. The label survives years of travel. The box does not.

Match wattage, voltage and tip

Three numbers matter: output voltage (19.5V or 20V in this range), wattage (200W to 380W), and the connector shape. The ADP-380AB B uses a rectangle connector, so tip shape alone can rule a model out.

A lower-wattage brick on a high-power ROG means slow charging and CPU throttling while you game.

ADP marks the ASUS adapter family, and the three digits are the wattage class. An ADP-230GB B is a 230W brick. An ADP-380AB B is 380W. The trailing letters mark the revision, so match the full code on the label, letters included. See all six part numbers on this page.
No. ASUS machines ship with adapters from 45W up to 380W, with different barrel sizes and, on the newest bricks like the ADP-380AB B, a rectangle connector. Some thin models charge over USB-C instead. ASUS itself warns against swapping adapters between models. Match the part number on your original brick and the guesswork disappears.
Yes, when the voltage and connector match. The laptop draws only the power it needs, and ASUS recommends an adapter with output equal to or higher than the original. A 280W brick on a machine that shipped with 230W generally runs cooler than the original did. The tip and the voltage must match exactly, so read the label before you swap anything.
A small step down usually just charges slower. A large gap causes real trouble: the battery drains while you game even with the cable in, the CPU throttles, and the brick runs hot trying to keep up. That heat is what kills underpowered chargers. A 380W machine like the 2025 Strix G16 on a 200W brick is the worst pairing on this page.
Some models can, some cannot. Look for a small power icon next to the USB-C port, or check your model's spec sheet on the ASUS support site. USB Power Delivery negotiates the wattage automatically, so it is safe when the port supports it. The catch is scale: 100W over USB-C cannot feed a gaming load that wants 280W. Treat USB-C as a top-up for light use, and keep the barrel brick for gaming.
The clearest sign is a battery that drops or stalls while the laptop is plugged in. Another is charging that only works with the cable held at one angle. Bend the cable gently along its length and watch the charge light: flickering means a broken wire inside. A burning smell or a crackling sound means stop using the brick immediately. One flip side: if the laptop runs fine plugged in but dies the moment you unplug, that points at the battery, not the charger.
Warm is normal. A brick running near its limit, feeding a gaming session while the battery recharges, will always feel warm. Hot is different. A charger you cannot comfortably hold, or one that smells, points at a worn cable, a damaged connector, or an underpowered substitute working past its rating. Keep it off carpet and blankets, give it air, and unplug it when you are not using it.
About two to three years of daily use, often longer with care. The usual killers are habits, not age: wrapping the cable tight around the brick, yanking it out by the cord, and running it under blankets. When charging turns inconsistent or the connector only works at one angle, the brick is telling you it is done.
