That's the name on the box. The name on the charger label is something else — ADP-120, ADP-180, ADP-240 — and all three fit a Katana 15, depending on which GPU is inside, which depends on which configuration you bought, and none of that is obvious from the box. Dell has a data chip to stop you. Lenovo has a resistor. MSI has neither of those things, which sounds helpful until you realize the laptop won't warn you if you plug in the wrong brick. It'll just slow down. Quietly.

So we start with the label. Read the OUTPUT line. Note the wattage. Everything below follows from that one number.

These are compatible replacement adapters built to the original spec. Brand names describe fitment only.

1. The Model Name Won't Tell You the Wattage

Dell has a system. Lenovo has a system. HP has a system.

MSI does not.

A Katana 15 with an RTX 2050 ships with 120W. The same Katana 15 with an RTX 4060 ships with 180W or 240W. The name on the box is the same. The model number on the bottom sticker narrows it down — B12VGK versus B13VGK tells you the generation — but only the charger label settles it. Volts. Amps. Watts. Read that.

In most cases, higher GPU means higher wattage. RTX 3050 Katana: 120–150W. RTX 4070 Raider: 240–280W. RTX 5090 Titan: 400W. But these are ranges, not rules. The label catches what the name misses.

Don't guess from the model name. A 180W adapter on a Katana 15 that needs 240W will connect, power on, and then — under gaming load — the GPU will throttle and the battery will drain. No warning pop-up. No BIOS message. MSI doesn't have Dell's "adapter not recognized" screen. It just gets slower.

2. MSI Wattage Tiers

Every MSI gaming adapter I've tested runs at 19.5V. Here's the full picture:

The 400W tier arrived in 2025 with the RTX 50-series. Different connector. Different brick. More on that below.

3. Three Connector Sizes, and the Acer Trap

MSI uses three barrel connector sizes:

The Acer trap. Both brands use a 5.5 mm outer-diameter plug. MSI's inner hole is 2.5 mm. Acer's is 1.7 mm. Side by side on a listing, they look the same. Try to use one on the other's port and it won't go — but it looks like it should. I've found that this one mismatch causes more MSI charger returns than anything else. 2.5 mm = MSI. 1.7 mm = Acer.

One more thing about the GF63 and GF75: the same model name can ship with either the 5.5 × 2.5 mm or the 4.5 × 3.0 mm connector. Which one depends on the production batch, and the spec sheet won't tell you. Measure your plug. Or read the connector spec on the original adapter label — if it's printed there. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't.

4. Going Up Works. Going Down Doesn't.

A 240W adapter on a Katana that shipped with 120W works fine — the laptop pulls what it needs, the brick runs cooler. A 330W covers 280W, 240W, and below. The 400W Titan adapter covers 330W setups if the connector matches.

Going down is what fails. And on MSI, you won't know it's happening. No BIOS warning. No pop-up. No resistor check. An underpowered adapter connects, powers on, lets you work — at reduced speed. The GPU throttles. The battery drains while plugged in. The laptop says nothing. I've talked to MSI owners who spent hours debugging their GPU before they checked the charger.

5. No Data Chip — Why That's Good and Bad

Dell hides a 1-Wire EEPROM in its 7.4 mm plug. The BIOS reads it at boot. Wrong chip, no data — CPU locked to 800 MHz. Lenovo puts a resistor on the Slim Tip center pin. Wrong resistance — laptop refuses to charge.

MSI checks the voltage, sees 19.5V, and draws power. No chip. No resistor. No handshake.

This is good because compatible replacements are simpler. Any adapter with the right voltage, enough watts, and the correct plug will work — no BIOS warning, no throttling triggered by a missing chip. This is bad because the laptop won't stop you from using an underpowered brick. It'll connect, power on, and slowly starve itself without telling you.

The upside wins if you do the one thing. Match the wattage. Then the simplicity works in your favor — no chip to program, no resistor to match, no surprises.

6. Titan 400W and USB-C (2024–2025)

The 2025 Titan 18 HX, Raider 18, and Vector A18 — all with RTX 5080 or 5090 GPUs — ship with a 400W brick. It's the highest-wattage laptop charger on the market. 7.4 × 5.0 mm connector. Won't fit the 5.5 mm port on lower-tier models. If you have a 2025 Titan, you need this brick — an older 330W won't connect.

USB-C Power Delivery showed up on the Stealth and Summit series. It's a travel backup. 100W through USB-C handles email, browsing, video. It won't game. Keep the barrel brick for that.

7. GaN for MSI

The stock 240W MSI charger weighs about 600 grams. The 280W and 330W units push past 700. Carry one daily and you feel it.

A GaN replacement at the same wattage cuts roughly 25–30% off the weight and shrinks the case to something that fits in a laptop bag pocket. A traditional 280W silicon adapter at full gaming load reaches about 65°C on the case. The GaN version stays around 52°C. The truth is, for a machine that already runs hot, that gap matters — for the charger's life and for whatever it's sitting on.

8. FAQ

Can I use a different wattage charger on my MSI laptop?

Yes — if it's higher than your original, and the voltage (19.5V) and connector match. A 240W charger on a 120W Katana is safe and runs cooler. Never go lower: the GPU will throttle and the battery will drain under load, with no warning from the laptop.

Does the charger model number need to match?

No. ADP-180, A20-240P2A — these are internal part codes. What matters are the specs on the label: voltage, amperage, wattage. Match those and the connector, and the charger works.

What connector size does my MSI laptop use?

Most (120W–280W) use 5.5 × 2.5 mm. Some GF63 Thin and GF75 use 4.5 × 3.0 mm. High-end models (330W–400W) use 7.4 × 5.0 mm. Same model name can ship with different connectors — measure your existing plug.

What happens with a lower wattage charger?

It connects. It powers on. Under load, the GPU throttles and the battery drains — no warning. MSI doesn't alert you the way Dell or Lenovo does. Match or exceed your original wattage.

Can a 180W charger work on a 120W MSI laptop?

Yes. Higher wattage is safe — the laptop only draws what it needs. The 180W adapter runs cooler. Just match the voltage (19.5V) and connector.
