ASUS ROG Charger Replacement: Get the Connector Right, Then the Wattage

ASUS quietly changed the plug on its 2024 machines, so the very first thing to settle is which connector your laptop has. A 280W power brick is useless if the tip won't physically slot into the port — and on a current Zephyrus, an older round-barrel adapter won't.

The round 6.0 × 3.7mm barrel was the ROG standard for years, and it has a center pin inside that thinner generic tips don't. Then the latest Zephyrus and Strix moved to a flat rectangular jack — ASUS calls it the Slim Power Jack. The two aren't interchangeable in either direction. That spare brick from your old Strix? It won't reach a 2024 G16. This single change is behind a large share of "the charger I bought doesn't fit" complaints.
Own a 2024 or 2025 ROG? Look at the port before you buy anything. A flat rectangular slot means you need a Slim Power Jack adapter (or a compatible tip), not the old round barrel — even when the wattage on the label is identical.

If you own a Strix or a Scar, odds are you're after the 280W tier — it covers more of that lineup than any other. The 380W brick is the new arrival, built for the 2025 RTX 5080 and 5090 configurations. Interestingly, ASUS made the 380W unit more compact than the old 330W it replaced, though at roughly a kilo it's still a chunky thing to carry.
Going up in wattage is fine. Going down isn't.
Your laptop pulls only the current it needs, so a higher-rated adapter just sits there with extra headroom and tends to run cooler. A 330W ROG brick will run a machine that came with 280W, 240W, or 230W without complaint. A 380W covers 280W and below. The reverse doesn't work: feed a 330W Scar from a 240W adapter and you'll get throttling, slow charging, or the battery draining mid-game while it's still plugged in.
The ROG-specific asterisk: all of that is true only within the same connector family. A 330W barrel adapter does nothing for a Slim Power Jack laptop, because the plug can't seat. Settle the connector, then match or step up the wattage.

The "Non-ASUS Charger" message. ROG laptops carry a small authentication chip in the charging circuit that checks what's plugged in. Use an underpowered or unrecognized adapter and Armoury Crate may pop a warning and quietly cap CPU and GPU power — that's the system protecting itself, not a defect. A properly rated compatible adapter that matches the voltage and wattage avoids the performance hit.
USB-C charging is a backup, not a replacement. Plenty of recent ROG models will take a charge over USB-C Power Delivery, which is handy for travel. But ASUS caps PD at 100W on most of the range, and a gaming laptop can pull far more than that under load. So USB-C is great for browsing on a train; it's not enough to gain you full frame rates in a demanding title. For that, the main DC brick stays essential.

High wattage means build quality isn't optional
A 280W or 380W adapter pushes serious power for hours during a long session, so a flimsy unit is a real hazard, not a small compromise. A decent compatible ROG charger should carry over-voltage, over-current, short-circuit, and over-temperature protection, plus CE, FCC, and RoHS marks. Why won't my old ROG charger fit my new Zephyrus?
Because the plug changed. From 2024, Zephyrus G14, G16, and G18 use the flat ASUS Slim Power Jack rather than the older round 6.0 × 3.7mm barrel. The shapes are physically incompatible, so a pre-2024 charger simply can't connect. You'll want a Slim Power Jack adapter or a matching tip.
Can I charge my ROG laptop with a lower-wattage charger?
For light tasks like browsing or video with the laptop powered down or idle, a lower-wattage or USB-C PD charger can top it up slowly. Under a real gaming load it falls short — the system draws more than the adapter supplies, so it pulls from the battery even while plugged in, and you'll see throttling.
