2. Number 1: The Capacity Ratio (FCC ÷ DC)

Open Command Prompt as administrator, run powercfg /batteryreport, and open the HTML file it saves to your user folder. Under "Installed batteries," you find two capacity values:

3. Number 2: The Cycle Count

One cycle equals a full discharge from 100% to 0%. Two half-discharges count as one cycle. The same battery report that shows your capacities also lists the current cycle count.

HP rates most laptop batteries for 300–500 cycles before they degrade past the 80% health mark. Two batteries can read the same 75% health while telling very different stories: a 75% pack at 150 cycles has a problem, while a 75% pack at 450 cycles simply aged on schedule.

In my experience, cycle count predicts shutdowns better than the capacity ratio does. A battery that hits 500 cycles tends to cut out under load even when Windows still reports 70% health, because the cells sag under current draw.

4. Number 3: HP's Load Test Verdict

HP's own diagnostics answer a different question than Windows does: can the pack deliver power when the laptop demands it? You run it two ways:

The truth is, I trust the HP verdict over the Windows math in every disagreement. Windows measures what the pack stores. HP measures what the pack delivers. A battery can store 70% of its original energy and still fail to deliver it fast enough for a modern CPU.

5. False Alarm 1: Adaptive Battery Optimizer

Newer HP laptops ship with Adaptive Battery Optimizer. The feature caps the charge ceiling at 80–90% to slow wear when the laptop lives on the dock. Windows then reports full charge capacity below design capacity, because the pack never fully charges.

Your battery looks 10–20% worse than it is. Before you order a replacement, check HP Support Assistant for the optimizer status. If it sits at "Enabled," disable it for one full charge cycle, regenerate the battery report, and compare the numbers. In my experience, roughly one in five "worn out" reports I see comes back healthy after this single step.

6. False Alarm 2: Windows and HP Disagree

The two tools disagree often, and the gap scares people into buying batteries they don't need. Here are the two patterns:

Windows says 70%, HP says Good. Normal. Windows counts stored energy mathematically. HP tests delivery under load. When the pack delivers clean power, HP's verdict wins.
Windows says 85%, HP says Weak. The pack stores energy but sags under load. Trust HP. This battery will shut the laptop down at 30% charge during heavy use.

Also check your BIOS version before trusting either tool. HP fixed a Pavilion Plus 14-ew1000 firmware bug (F.10) that misreported full charge capacity. A BIOS update from F.10 to F.11 corrected the readings. If your numbers swing wildly between reboots, update the BIOS before you shop for batteries.
